Commerce North West manager Sue Wicks said Mount Isa businesses were well-positioned to cash in as the city’s population swells for the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
“Many tourists use the rodeo weekend as a break in their travels,” she said.
“So they are taking time to do maintenance of their vehicles and themselves, stocking up on food, taking a break and enjoying our hospitality.”
Commerce North West has implemented a ‘‘Buy Local’’ campaign, which started on August 1, encouraging people to spend their money in the city and potentially win $5000.
“That’s a great way to increase the tourist spend in the city,” Ms Wicks said.
“A lot of that has to do with our own attitude.”
“When we look at the influx of tourists, we can either treat them like friends coming for a visit, or treat them like they are a nuisance. The more friendly reception they get, the more likely they are to stay in town and support more local businesses.”
Ms Wicks said the city vibe is “very energised” for rodeo week.
“We have country music, people dressed in theme, and business premises decorated to celebrate. Let’s make sure our people are delivering an equally welcoming message.”
The ‘‘Buy Local’’ campaign has been created to support and promote local businesses within Mount Isa.
When customers purchase more than $100 at any store involved in the campaign they are automatically entered in the draw to win $5,000. You can enter as many times as you’d like, with the draw being held once a month.
The campaign run for five months until December. Participating businesses include Brogdens Furniture, Malouf, Worn out West, Frameworld, Wizzamakids, Sole Struck, helloworld, The Boss Shop, MacRae News, Bell & Moir Toyota, and Bambinos.
