Geelong again found themselves with their backs against the walls as they trailed by 18 points at three-quarter time. At the 20-minute mark of the final term the Cats were still nine points adrift but a pair of James Podsiadly goals in time on put Geelong's noses in front. With seven seconds left in the game, Jack Gunston had a quick snap for goal from 20 metres out in heavy traffic but it bounced the wrong side of the goal post and denied Hawthorn a drought-breaking win.

Another titanic struggle which produced eight lead changes. The difference between the two sides failed to exceed 13 points all day and the match culminated with a grandstand final term that saw both sides basically go goal-for-goal. With Hawthorn trailing by three points at the 31-minute mark of the last quarter, Clinton Young had the chance to be the hero but his shot on goal from 35 metres out in front missed to the left.

After conceding the first three goals of the game, Hawthorn wiped the sleep from their eyes to take control of the contest and enjoyed a seemingly match-winning 28-point lead a few minutes into the final term. Geelong responded to boot the final five goals of the game and with scores level at the 31-minute mark of the final quarter, it looked headed for a draw. But just moments after a hurried Joel Corey kick was marked by Jimmy Bartel in Geelong's forward pocket, the siren sounded. All that was required of the 2007 Brownlow Medallist was a score to secure a famous victory and from a tight angle 20 metres out, he kicked the most important point of his decorated career.

The curse is finally lifted ! And after 11 straight losses to Geelong, the Hawks could not have picked a better stage to exorcise their blue-and-white demons. Things were looking grim for Alastair Clarkson's men after a bumper seven-goal third quarter handed Geelong a commanding 20-point lead at the final change. The Hawks hit back in devastating fashion to take a six-point advantage 28 minutes into the final quarter. The ball was virtually parked in Hawthorn's forward half after three-quarter time, but poor goalkicking (4.8) kept the Cats alive. With 37 seconds left in the contest, Travis Varcoe could have sent the game into extra time but his shot on goal from 35 metres out directly in front missed to the right and Hawthorn hung on for an incredible win. They would go onto win their 11th premiership eight days later.

Not only was this game the pick of the bunch, it was also one of the greatest contests of all time. Hawthorn headed into this match with a full head of steam having won their previous eight games by an average of 81 points. It seemed as though no one could stop them. So when Geelong careered to a 51-point lead a few minutes into the second quarter, the footy world was abuzz. However, the Hawks gradually chipped away at their sizeable deficit over the course of the next two quarters before amazingly leading by eight points 27 minutes into the final term. Geelong appeared done and dusted but a pair of late Tom Hawkins goals, including a monster on the final siren from 60 metres out, ensured Geelong won a modern-day classic.
