And just like that the Warriors' season ended with barely a whimper.

The team that promised so much during the early rounds seemed to vanish once Shaun Johnson limped from the field four games ago.

Penrith moved away from the dreaded wooden spoon with a 24-10 win against the Warriors, who were playing for their season.

Except for a five minute two-try burst, the Warriors put up little fight.

Penrith can be happy with the performance of youngsters Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Tyrone Peachey in the four try to two victory in front of 6774 people at Pepper Stadium.

The victory ended Penrith's five game losing streak in a match where both teams struggled to retain possession as the weather worsened.

The game was also Nigel Plum's 150th and final first grade appearance before retiring immediately. Plum told his teammates after the game and told Panthers coach Ivan Cleary before kick-off.

"He told me before the game," Cleary said. "He has taken a few knocks and a big one a few weeks back. If he is thinking about that sort of risk, maybe he should give it away. I was bit worried tonight. If that's the way you're thinking and you're ok to play tonight?"

The Panthers opened the scoring. A wide shift and early ball to Lewis Brown saw him beat opposite Dominique Peyroux and Lolohea with footwork and speed to score after nine minutes.

After squandering his first opportunity, Api Koroisau – who started the game in place of James Segeyaro -  gifted Campbell-Gillard his debut NRL try, with a cut-out pass from dummy-half to allow the prop to crash over.

Campbell-Gillard's celebrations were soured a short time later when he was placed on report for making contact with the head of Sam Rapira. Rapira left the field with concussion and did not return.

While Warriors coach Andrew McFadden said he doesn't "know what a shoulder charge is", his counterpart Cleary was sure there was nothing wrong with Campbell-Gillard's tackle.

"It was a head clash," Cleary said. "That's the way I saw it. I don't know if he was penalised for as shoulder charge. Maybe his shoulder hits Sam head. It certainly wasn't a shoulder charge. If you look closely it was more of a head clash. Completely accidental.

"I was just happy with the boys. It's been a pretty rough month. The last three games we have had every opportunity to win the game but couldn't get it done.

"We could've won that one by a little bit more."

Down 14-0, the Warriors clawed their way back to score back-to-back tries before half-time with the first to Sam Tomkins.

The Warriors added more points four minutes later after interchange player Konrad Hurrell crossed just moments after entering play.

Just as quickly as the Warriors seemed to be back in the match, it was taken away from them.

With a minute remaining before half-time, Smith raced 60 metres from a kick return. A next play shift to the opposite tryline, eventually found Jamie Soward drifting sideways before Tyrone Peachey gave him an inside option. Peachey raced 40 metres to give the Panthers a 20-10 half-time lead.

Peachey again starred after half-time. His line break saw the Panthers race 50 metres before an early take kick from Segeyaro found winger Dave Simmons and extended the Panthers lead by 14 after 50 minutes.

McFadden said his team were "tired".

"After how we started it would've been OK going in 14-10 at half-time," McFadden said.  "That long range try and the same again after half-time. That's where we are at. "We get them down the corner and then they are scoring."
