Lyon expressed his disdain for the rarely-seen act on Monday night and even recalled an incident during his career where he claimed he was bitten by West Coast's Chris Lewis during in an exhibition match.

Lewis was not suspended over the alleged altercation, but he was the last player sanctioned for biting. He bit the finger of Lyon's former Demons teammate Todd Viney in a separate incident in a regular season match.

The former West Coast star copped a three-match ban back in 1991, a suspension that stands as an exceptional precedent for the Masten case that is set for a tribunal hearing on Tuesday night.

Footage and audio from Sunday's West Australian derby shows Docker Suban claiming "he f**king bit me" after an altercation with Masten.

There is also a picture of Suban's arm that will be admitted as evidence for the alleged incident.

Lyon did not comment on Masten's guilt or otherwise, but insisted the penalty should be severe if the tribunal were to suspend him.

"It's got to be a three, four or five-week penalty," Lyon said Channel Nine's Footy Classified.

"You can't bite someone."

A three-match ban would leave an already stretched West Coast list without a key midfield player for the remainder of the home-and-away season. Anything above that would jeopardise Masten's involvement in the club's expected finals campaign.

Former Essendon great Tim Watson said he rated biting along with "spitting, kicking someone and grabbing someone in the groin area" in the same category of on-field acts.

North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey agreed the penalty should be harsh, but feared it might not be given: "right now, the match review panel are probably at their most soft".

However Carey also acknowledged that the tribunal system could be under pressure to make a stand this week given AFL football operations manager Mark Evans publicly stated his belief that Adam Cooney's one-match ban for bumping was too lenient last week.
