The Cats made a series of poor decisions and skill errors in the final two minutes that led up to them conceeding the behind from St Kilda's Shane Savage that ultimately locked the scores at 97 apiece at Etihad Stadium.

But vision of the final moments of the game suggests perhaps the biggest error might have been missed by the umpires.

A freeze frame of Jimmy Bartel's final kick-in - which followed the Savage behind with 14 seconds remaining - shows that the veteran Cat might have over-stepped as he was launching the long kick out of St Kilda's attacking goal square.

Had the umpire made the call, play would have been stopped and a ball-up at the top of the goal square would have occurred.

This would have set up an opportunity for the Saints to force a potentially match-winning score.

In that instance, Geelong defenders would not have been allowed to knock the ball over the Saints' goal line on the full from the ball up.

However, attacking St Kilda players - for example ruckman Tom Hickey - would have had that option available to them.

It has been stated that this scenario could have allowed American ruckman Jason Holmes to emerge as the hero on debut by using his incredible leap to jump over the Cats' defence, however Holmes was not on the ground during the final two minutes.

The drawn result was crucial for Geelong in terms of the bigger finals picture - for a loss would have left the club too far behind 8th-placed Adelaide to catch up in the final two rounds.

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy featured the vision during a segment on Fox Footy's On The Couch program on Monday night.

"Geelong, who are still in contention, shouldn't be in contention," Healy said.

"That vision clearly shows that the umpire should have blown his whistle, brought it back and bounced the ball."
