DENVER: Jack Bechta, the US NFL agent who took a gamble on an unknown Jarryd Hayne, says he's been inundated with calls about the Australian but insists his client still has plenty of work to do to even make San Francisco's 53-man roster.

Just like 49ers coach Jim Tomsula and Hayne himself, Bechta is reluctant to get swept up in the hype surrounding the man described by experts as the story of pro football this pre-season.

Despite incredible interest in Hayne from the NFL world and potential sponsors, Bechta insists Hayne's heroics in the first two weeks of the pre-season won't be enough on its own to earn a spot on the reduced 49ers roster to be named on September 5.

"Of course it's not a done deal yet," Bechta told Fairfax Media. "He's making a great impact on special teams. He's turning heads as a punt returner. He's showing he can cover and return kicks. But he is half way through his audition and has half way to go. So far so good. But I for one am not surprised. He has spent a lot of time on his own, preparing, studying, letting himself be coached. But the reality is, he's half way through his audition.

"The feedback I keep getting from the 49ers is simple - he's steadily improving. He still has got a lot to learn. Jim has got 90 men to manage on the roster. Jarryd's not the only guy on the roster. A lot of decisions need to be made in a lot of positions. They have some good depth on running back. There are a lot of guys hurt so Jarryd's getting an opportunity to play in pre-season. He's staying healthy, practising hard and trying to make the most of his opportunity."

Hayne stands to earn big dollars over the next three years if he can make the 53-man roster at the San Francisco 49ers, having signed a $US1.58 million deal. However if Hayne doesn't make the cut, he will still walk away with $US115,000 as per the guarantee agreed upon during negotiations.

Selection in the roster will see Hayne earn a base salary of $US435,000 for his rookie season, increasing in his second year to $US525,000 and $US615,000 in his third year.

Because Hayne is an undrafted agent, he will have to wait until after his second year before renegotiating his contract, however considering the interest shown in the 27-year-old, he stands to earn a lot more off the field. Hayne's already in discussions with US sports gear giant Under Armour, which lists Tom Brady, Jordan Spieth and Stephen Curry among its leading athletes, but Bechta insists its premature to entertain endorsement deals.

"We're getting all kinds of calls from around the States and Australia. People are interested in him," Bechta said.

"I've received a lot of texts and emails from people asking about Jarryd. None I can really get into but put it this way, a lot of people know who Jarryd is now. I don't really want to elaborate because we're pushing everything aside until he makes the team. His focus needs to be on the 49ers. Every day, every rep, every opportunity - he has to make it count. Every extra minute he has, he is learning, studying. People are seeing the highlights in Australia, but no one sees the mistakes he's made. You wouldn't know that watching the game.

"It's human nature when someone becomes an amazing story, a lot people want to get on the bandwagon. I've had people calling about a little of both [endorsements and intrigue]. Everybody is rooting for him. Everybody is really impressed with what he's been able to do in such a short period of time. His story has been out there for a while, but seeing it unfold before us is different. That's what has caught the attention of everyone. But we're just ignoring a lot of the hype and a lot of the feelers."

If Hayne isn't selected in the roster after the remaining two trials against Denver and San Diego, rival NFL franchises have an opportunity to pick him up before the Niners can select him in the team's 10-man practice squad 24 hours later.

It's hard to imagine Hayne being overlooked by the entire NFL after the noise he's made in the pre-season, with Bechta admitting that regardless of what happens in the coming weeks, his client has proved he has a future in the sport. "He's shown he belongs," Bechta said.

"He's showing he can compete. He's showing that his athletic ability and his ability to learn is as good as any other rookie that was drafted this year, if not better. He's making it look easy, but there are 10 other people around blocking for him. He's put in all the work and got rid of distractions. He's not listening to the hype. I think the Australian fan base and market base must understand that only 53 guys will be on the roster and 10 guys on the practice squad.

"Even then, 46 of those guys are active for games, so there'll be inactive players as well. Not everyone can be there. A lot of these roster decisions are made on need from position to position and based on depth in position to position. Australian fans are probably focusing on what Jarryd is displaying but picking a roster is like putting together a rubix cube. It all has to fit in place. It's a puzzle. Teams can't keep everyone they want to keep. That's the reality."
