With the eight finalists set after Geelong's loss to Collingwood on Friday night, attention has turned to the potential composition of week one finals, which appear likely to begin in Perth.

Both first-placed Fremantle and second-placed West Coast can lock in home qualifying finals on Sunday, with the two sides needing only one win each from their final two games to ensure they won't travel again until late September.

It's understood that in the highly likely event that West Coast and Fremantle earn the top two spots on the ladder, one final would be almost certainly played at Domain Stadium on Friday, September 11.

An industry source claimed that there was "98 per cent" chance no final would be played in Perth on a Sunday. As two matches could not be held at the ground on the Saturday, that would mean one match has to be played on each of the Friday night and either Saturday afternoon or Saturday night.

An AFL spokesman told Fairfax Media on Saturday that no games had yet been locked in for week one of the finals, with various options looked at.

But AFL general manager of scheduling and broadcasting Simon Lethlean appeared on 3AW ​on Saturday afternoon, and confirmed that whichever of the West Australian sides finished higher on the ladder would probably get a home final on a Saturday to ensure a longer break, while the second-placed side would probably open the finals on the Friday night.

"I think the best thing to do is for those [West Australian] teams to have the biggest breaks out of those games," Lethlean said.

The Sunday timeslot in week one has featured an elimination final in every season since a flexible fixture for the final round was introduced in 2010. The flexible schedule was introduced following the situation in 2009 in which three of the top four played on the Sunday of the final round that year, which eventually meant St Kilda had to face Collingwood in a qualifying final on the Sunday of week one, before the Magpies played Adelaide in a semi-final the following week despite having two fewer days rest than the Crows.

The Dockers have Melbourne (home) and Port Adelaide (away) in the final two rounds, while the Eagles play Adelaide (away) and St Kilda (home).

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan told 3AW on Friday that the Western Bulldogs would be unlikely to face any opposition other than Adelaide in a final at Etihad Stadium, with a final against other Victorian opposition almost certainly played at the MCG.
