Robbie Farah is preparing to dig his heels in and remain at Wests Tigers next year, even if it means playing in the NSW Cup.

Only an approach from a high-profile Sydney-based club will sway Farah into leaving the Tigers, despite the club's wishes to move him on at the end of this season.

While Gold Coast and Newcastle may have salary cap space, Farah won't move away from Sydney and is only interested in joining a club that is likely to be in premiership contention next season.

South Sydney would be Farah's first priority should they come in with an offer.

There has been interest from the English Super League, but Farah still wants to play Origin and wants at least one more season in Australia. He was boosted by the support of Blues coach Laurie Daley, who said he would be willing to pick Farah to play for NSW next year even if he spends the start of the season in reserve grade.

The stand-off could see Farah become the most expensive NSW Cup player in history with the Tigers skipper owed about $950,000 next season. A host of current and former teammates have rallied around Farah, including former teammate Benji Marshall who has been in constant contact with Farah since news of his likely departure broke on Tuesday.

Coach Jason Taylor has spent time explaining to the playing group the reasons behind the move to dump the club captain.

"I've had chats to a couple of individuals," Taylor said. "I'll continue to chat with guys about it because, ultimately, it's going to be really important for everyone to understand really deeply exactly why. I haven't felt an extreme need to do a heap of that at this point."

The situation came to a head when Farah and manager Sam Ayoub met with Taylor and Rod Reddy on Tuesday night. While he may have been told he would be dumped from full-time training, Farah at this stage is prepared to fight for his spot as he enjoys the support of teammates.

When asked what would happen should Farah return for pre-season training in November, Taylor replied: "I'm not going to get into that one today."

Taylor said he had spoken with the players about how the conversations with Farah took place.

"We've had some discussions about that," Taylor said. "The way things have played out has been due to a number of circumstances. Lots and lots of circumstances that were really hard to control.

"Respecting Robbie has always been at the forefront of everything that we've done. We will continue to do it that way. Tough discussions and numerous people involved. Sometimes they don't go the way we like them to go and our hand got forced. That made it a lot tougher."

Farah will turn out for the Tigers against the Warriors in what could be his final appearance at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday. Such is the uncertainty there is no planned tribute for Farah, who is a life member of the club.

Taylor said Farah had "been really professional through it".

"It's been tough for the players and I wouldn't expect it to be any other way and I wouldn't expect anything other than for the guys to support Robbie," Taylor said.

"I spoke to them at the start of the week about the fact they should support him. He has been their teammate for a long time, and he has come really close, as you do. At the same time, tough decisions get made in rugby league and that's where it's at.

"It's been tough for Robbie. It's a credit to him the way he turns up each day and gets on with the job."

The Tigers need to beat the Warriors if they are any hope of avoiding the wooden spoon.
