Jarryd Hayne's ability to play on special teams will play a huge factor in San Francisco coach Jim Tomsula's decision on whether to pick the Australian in the 49ers' 53-man squad.

Hayne is expected to be included in the 75-man cut off on September 1, however Tomsula still has another five days and a trial against the San Diego Chargers on September 3 to decide if the 27-year-old is worth holding on to.

The former Parramatta Eels superstar put his name up in lights after the first two weeks of the pre-season, and despite limited time against the Denver Broncos on Saturday night, showed he didn't look out of place on an NFL field.

"Well Jarryd obviously has himself in the conversation," Tomsula said when asked of Hayne's chances of making the final cut on September 5. "I don't want to sit here and make statements, but Jarryd has himself in the conversation. Special teams value is very high when you are talking about the last few spots on the team."

Hayne has allowed himself little time to reflect or bask in his own glory, refusing to get caught up in the hype that has surrounded his incredible transition from the NRL to the NFL. But after Saturday night's loss to the Broncos at Mile High Stadium, Hayne showed the first signs of satisfaction in the heroic feats he has managed to produce in such a short time.

"Oh definitely," Hayne said when asked if he was proud of how far he has come. "That's what life is all about, taking those opportunities and not letting them slip. For me, the door pretty much wasn't open - I had to open the door to come here. When God calls you to something, you have to walk by faith and not by sight. It's been one heck of a ride, you know what I mean."

Pressed on how he felt heading into the roster cuts, Hayne said: "Nothing, just looking forward to tomorrow".

"I don't control the future so I'm not worrying about something I don't control. I'm happy coming over here and doing what I've been able to do the last couple of games. I put my best foot forward, I've felt, and if the coaches like it, they like it."

While Hayne got limited minutes against the Broncos as the starters took centre stage, things should be a lot different when the Niners return home to Levi's Stadium for their final trial against the Chargers on September 3.

Hayne is expected to be given most of the kick and punt return duties, while also continuing to show his wares at running back despite the likelihood of spending the majority of his rookie year playing special teams.

"The difference [in the next game[ is the starters play a bit longer - that's the only difference. When I went on it was the twos and threes. I knew that. I just tried to do what I could do. Next game is going to be a game that we'll get a lot of time, obviously if I'm still here.

"The starters don't play, it's pretty much the twos and threes the whole game. This is where we'll get a ton of time so it's going to be good. I'll go in there and do what I do. Come what may."

Hayne showed good footwork and vision to find space for his first catch,  something he's been learning from fellow running back Reggie Bush. "Yeah, definitely, definitely - and Reggie is probably the best at it," Hayne said. "Having Reggie everyday and watching him do it, he's the one I'm trying to mimic because he's so good at it."
