Ball, who retired at the end of 2014 and this year joined the AFL match review panel, confirmed on Sunday that he was approached by Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell to help the Dons select James Hird's replacement as coach.

"I had an informal chat with Xavier Campbell, he rang me probably through the connection with the skipper [Jobe Watson] there who I'm good mates with," Ball said on Channel Nine.

"That was flattering to start with.

"In the end I said I probably don't have the time to dedicate to it at the moment.

"But I know they're right in the thick of establishing that committee and will take their time to make sure they get it right."

Fairfax Media reported on Sunday that the Dons would announce the members of their committee as early as Monday.

Bombers champion and current goalkicking coach Matthew Lloyd added that the combination of Scott Camporeale and John Worsfold who together have steered Adelaide from the despair of Phil Walsh's death to the finals, would be "absolutely fantastic" for Essendon.

"The best-case scenario," Lloyd said.
