Speaking after sections of the St Kilda crowd were criticised for booing Sydney star Adam Goodes on Sunday evening, McGuire said it was a good thing that supporters had become more tentative about booing players.

Incidents of Goodes being jeered by supporters were highlighted on social media throughout the game, with some fans calling others out for attacking Goodes, but the Swans were not alarmed.

There was a belief at the ground that some early booing of Goodes dissipated quickly and that it was nowhere anywhere near the campaign of abuse that forced him from the game late last month.

Goodes was jeered after receiving a 50-metre penalty, then cheered by the crowd after slotting a goal with his subsequent kick.

In response to reports that Goodes had again been booed, Swans chairman Andrew Pridham praised the crowd, tweeting that the Saints fans "were terrific - well done".

"I've asked around the place. I didn't see the game but my understanding is there wasn't any boos or jeers of Adam in the course of play which was a major issue a couple of weeks back but hasn't been since," McGuire said on Channel Nine.

"I get the feeling now that the football fans - and I find it even at non-Swans games if you like - that people are really now starting to be a bit more tentative about booing, which is a good thing.

"They're realising, 'now hang on, there's a bit more to this'.

"Yes, we want to have the boos of blokes lining up for goal and jeering and trying to put them off, which is part of the fun of the fair.

"But the bullying or the dehumanising, as I like to term it, of what was going on with Adam, I think has started to dissipate.

"I hope so. We'll find out in the next few weeks in the finals, but let's see how it goes."
