He will be monitored this week ahead of the club's final home-and-away game against Richmond on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.

Wells, 30, hasn't played at AFL level since round two after suffering an Achilles injury. He returned a fortnight ago to play for the Kangaroos' VFL affiliate North Ballarat, but his immediate and long-term future was again in doubt after he could not finish Saturday's game against Coburg due to a lower leg ailment.

There were initial fears that he had re-injured his Achilles, but a relieved North football manager Geoff Walsh allayed those concerns Monday morning.

"Our advice is that the injury is a low-level strain, so nothing major or of too much concern which is a good result in the circumstances and given his recent Achilles history," Walsh said in a statement.

Walsh expanded on the course of management for the injury-prone veteran, who has played just 12 AFL games since the start of 2014. "The medical team will work with him closely over the next couple of days to see how he responds to treatment before we determine his availability."

"We'll aim to get Daniel back up and running as soon as possible.

"We're still two weeks away from the start of finals so we have some time to get him right all going well."

Complicating a potential return for Wells is the fact that the Roosters' season is over, with Gerard FitzGerald's side having missed the VFL finals. That means Wells will need to come straight into the North Melbourne team if he is to play again in 2015.

The Roos' slim top four chances evaporated on Saturday when they lost to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad, but they remain assured of playing a week one elimination final. Brad Scott's team have few other injury worries, although defender Sam Wright experienced ankle soreness against the Dogs.
