Both former and current world champion players, Catherine Cox and Rebecca Bulley hosted two training clinics last week at Wellington Oval all for the benefit of the town’s junior netball players.
More than 350,000 people viewed the Gold medal game between the Diamonds and New Zealand at the world cup last month and Bulley said the team celebrations had only just ended.
“It’s been a really special year and a perfect way to finish (my career),” Bulley said.
Bulley had just come off an ANZ premiership win with the Queensland Firebirds over the New South Wales Swifts in one of the greatest contests before, to her surprise, receiving a call from the national coach.
“After the Firebirds grand final win, I was so ecstatic on what a way it was to finish up. Then I got a call from Lisa Alexander saying you’ve been selected for the Diamonds. I thought she was joking.”
“I said I can do that for another four weeks. Having the opportunity to represent Australia at a world championship in Sydney is awesome.”
Cox, who won the 2014 ANZ Championship with the Melbourne Vixens, knew all too well that the world cup was there for the taking for Australia.
“It was unreal,” Cox said.
“They deserved to win. There was no doubt in my mind that they weren’t going to.”
The two retired golden netballers have been running a Queensland roadshow of clinics for five years including visits to Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa, Airlie Beach, and Rockhampton.
“We love it because the kids don’t get these opportunities very often so we enjoy it as much as them,” Bulley said.
“The idea of it all was that we wanted to take some netball out to the places that don’t often get it. That’s how it started,” Cox said.
“The beauty of Bec and I is that I’m an attacker and she’s a defender so we do a general clinic then break it up into specialist parts.”
Next on the national radar for Cox and Bulley is Tasmania before heading to Victoria and country NSW.
