Darius Boyd, himself one of the feel-good stories of the season, believes Brisbane's young halves can rival any pairing in the NRL finals as they continue to impress deep into the Broncos campaign.

Brisbane are virtually guaranteed of finishing second on the ladder, barring a 50-point defeat at the hands of the Storm at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday and a similar winning margin from the Cowboys over the Gold Coast Titans.

Boyd has recovered from a snapped Achilles in pre-season and said he now wants to make the most of the opportunity presented to the Broncos, one that has arrived sooner than many had predicted giving the rebuilding work needed to be undertaken by Wayne Bennett.

At least part of that success can be attributed to the rise and rise of young halfback Ben Hunt and five-eighth Anthony Milford, who have combined to become a formidable combination behind the Broncos forward pack.

Given their age and limited exposure to each other's game, they will only get better, a prospect that is surely mouth-watering for the Broncos faithful as well as Mal Meninga's Queensland Maroons.

Boyd wouldn't trade them for anyone in the game at the moment, saying he felt that could match any combination in the post-season despite their inexperience at the pointy end of the year.

"They've been keeping us in a lot of games. They're always in the game and trying to get a win for us. That's no different coming into the finals and they showed on the weekend how good they can be," Boyd said.

"[Bennett's] good at getting the best out of players, especially young guys. We've had a few players here in different spots that have probably been on the fringe in recent seasons and you've seen them play their best footy this year.

"Corey Oates, [Lachlan] Maranta, the halves ... they're all playing really well. That's what Wayne brings."

Boyd's own misfortune this season means there is added incentive to make every post a winner in the finals, likely to begin with a home blockbuster against North Queensland rivals the Cowboys.

Like many of Brisbane's top-grade squad Boyd didn't suspect progress would be so rapid at Red Hill, but now the Broncos are within reach he wants to make sure they make the most of their chance.

"It's definitely an opportunity we don't want to let slip. To finish in the top two, that puts you in a really good spot come the finals," Boyd said.

"At the start of the year, when I got injured, I wasn't sure if I'd even get back to playing footy. So to be sitting here now where we are it's very exciting. I'm very thankful."

Brisbane dropped their first game to South Sydney before rattling off five straight to begin their charge. Boyd looks back on that streak as vital, with the youthful squad gaining some momentum that really hasn't looked like stopping for most of the season, which also included an eight-game run mid-year.

"Winning is contagious. We got on a bit of a roll and kept doing it. We've had some tough games during the year and some quality ones where we've had to knuckle down to get the win, or compete at times where young guys get valuable experience," Boyd said.

"Everyone knows what Wayne brings; a simple kind of football where everyone trusts each other and there's a big focus on defence. Everyone has bought into those concepts and want to prove their worth and play well for the squad.

"Everyone took a lot of confidence out of that start and have kept building."
