Anthony Griffin rules himself out of Newcastle Knights race

Former Brisbane Broncos coach Anthony Griffin has pulled out of the race for the Newcastle Knights job, leaving former Dragons coach Nathan Brown as the sole favourite.

Griffin, who was replaced by the Broncos board last year to bring Wayne Bennett back to Red Hill, said he didn't want to rush back into an NRL job.

He was believed to be one of the frontrunners to fill the vacancy along with former Brown, who reportedly had a second interview with the Knights on Monday.

Griffin said he opted out of the process last Thursday before any formal interview and while he still harbours ambitions to return to the NRL, wants to get the timing right.

"I wanted to make sure I was patient about getting back to the NRL and that I feel right about it," he said.

"I just didn't feel it was the right job for me."

Griffin is contracted to Intrust Super Cup side, the Redcliffe Dolphins for 2016 and has spent this year as a consultant with struggling side the CQ Capras.

The ex-Brisbane mentor had a 53 per cent winning rate with the Broncos over four seasons at the helm, where they finished third, 12th and eighth twice.

Maguire ruled himself out of the running earlier this week, reiterating his commitment to stay at the Rabbitohs, where he is contracted until the end of 2017.
