PINK and blue were the colours in vogue at the Northern Zone Trap Carnival held at Cloncurry Clay Target Club over the weekend. The Cloncurry club, along with other clubs in North Queensland have thrown their support behind the North Queensland Clay Target Shooters Pink and Blue Initiative, which was launched in May at the Normanton Gun Club annual shoot. The aim is to raise funds and increase awareness of two very worthwhile Cancer foundations, the McGrath Foundation and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, and to generate some positive publicity for the sport of clay target shooting.

“We wanted to choose something which is easily identifiable in the community, and the most easily recognised and well known Cancer Awareness initiative is the Pink Ribbon symbol representing Breast Cancer,”Normanton Gun Club president Wayne Reeves said.
“We chose the McGrath Foundation because they do some great work providing Breast Care Nurses and most people are familiar with them. We couldn’t leave out the blokes, so we added light blue, which is the colour for prostate cancer, and will be splitting the money we raise between the two foundations.”
Through donations, merchandise sales, and the support of corporate partners this group have raised over $5000 so far.
“We’ve done better than expected in our first year,” Cloncurry Clay Target Club president Jim Molloy said.
“We set a goal of $3000, which we thought was achievable, and we’ve exceeded that because of the extremely positive response the Initiative received, not only from the shooters, but also from other members of the community, and our local council.”
The Cloncurry Shire Council got behind the Initiative and added $500 to the kitty to help with catering expenses and make the weekend at Cloncurry Clay Target Club a success. CEO David Neeves attended the event, and along with Normanton Gun Club and Northern Zone President Wayne Reeves presented the $2500 cheques to Peter Little representing the North Western Prostate Cancer Support Group and also on behalf of the McGrath Foundation. Rob Katter MP, Member for Mount Isa was present to open the shoot on Saturday morning, and supported the Initiative to the tune of $1155.
“With corporate partners on board we can take the money they invest in the Initiative, buy some branded merchandise and sell it on to generate more money, effectively doubling the original donation,” Mr Reeves said.
The Muller family of McKinlay had a successful weekend of shooting, with Colin, Nevenka and Rose all qualifying in Zone Teams (Open, Ladies and Junior). Another Cloncurry club member, Stephen Curley also qualified for the Open Team, and won the Overall Highgun for the weekend.
The initiative will now sell bottled water with one dollar from each bottle sold will go to the Initiative, and the group is also looking at more merchandise options for 2016. If anyone would like to be involved by selling merchandise or coming on board as a corporate partner please contact Jim Molloy in Cloncurry on 0419 775 187, Wayne Reeves in Normanton on 0428 460 458 or Cherie Ryan on 0418 780 829
