And the club has still not been told whether James Aish will remain with them next year or ask for a trade.
They are determined not to lose Mayes, who was the club's first-round pick three years ago at No.8, and finished the season off strongly after a patchy start.
The 21-year-old South Australian is back home with family this week, and due back in Brisbane for this weekend's best and fairest function.
It is understood the clubs interested in Aish have been told he is definitely leaving the Lions to play elsewhere next year.
Richmond and St Kilda are among those to have shown some interest in the second-year midfielder, with Collingwood also linked to him.
However Aish caught up with coach Justin Leppitsch this week, had his exit interview without saying anything and was given an off-season fitness program to follow.
He attended the players' Wacky Wednesday - unlike Jack Redden and Matthew Leuenberger - and is expected to be at the best and fairest.
Aish's parents were also in Brisbane last weekend, along with other families, for an end-of-season gathering.
Aish is popular amongst his teammates and the Lions would happily keep him on next year, even if it meant him signing a single-season contract extension.
The Lions, Essendon, Adelaide and Richmond have had interest in running defender Nathan Wilson, but the 22-year-old has signed a new contract with GWS in recent days.
The Giants will move Adam Treloar to Collingwood during the trade period, with Carlton linked most strongly to defender Lachie Plowman and ruckman Andrew Phillips.
Sydney-raised ruckman Jarrod Witts may be discussed as part of the Treloar deal - which could include a future draft pick - with Sydney also believed to be interested in Witts.
Fremantle, the Western Bulldogs, Essendon and the Swans are the clubs linked most strongly to Leuenberger, a free agent this year.
It may be a few more weeks before outgoing Essendon defender Jake Carlisle nominates his club of choice, after quitting the Bombers this week.
Carlisle has gone away on holidays, with Carlton and St Kilda holding some interest in him. The Blues hold first choice in the preseason draft.
Redden has told the Lions he is interested in a trade to West Coast. Sydney speedster Lewis Jetta is the Eagles' top target.
