The graphic video shows the team of doctors in Aleppo performing an emergency caesarean on the Syrian woman who was reportedly wounded in an explosion.

The doctors can be seen cutting open the mother's belly, revealing a hole the size of a 20 cent coin in the lining of her womb, caused by a shard of shrapnel.

In the video posted to Facebook by the Aleppo City Medical Council, the doctors race to extricate the baby girl from her amniotic sac.

Seconds later her head emerges with a large piece of shrapnel lodged in her left eyebrow.

The tiny girl appears lifeless as the doctors work to revive her.

The video captures their relief as her soft cries can be heard.

The doctors then pull a V-shaped piece of mangled shrapnel from her forehead, leaving a nasty gash.

But the baby has been saved.

The girl and mother were reportedly in good health and recovering in hospital, according to the Facebook post.

The video is not dated and it is unclear when the procedure was carried out.

According to an English translation by Al Jazeera, the authors of the post that accompanied the video blamed the injuries on a missile attack carried out by "the criminal regime, which is trying to stop life in the city of Aleppo".

War torn Aleppo has been viciously fought over by Syrian opposition militia, Assad government forces and Kurdish fighters since 2011.

More than 200,000 people have reportedly been killed and an estimated four million have been forced to flee their homes.

The fraught birth in the dramatic video bears a striking resemblance to footage that emerged in August 2014 depicting a baby boy who survived a Syrian air strike that wounded his mother after she was hit with shrapnel that pierced her belly and scraped the baby's head.

The mother was injured during air strikes in the north-eastern Syrian city of Raqqa, which is currently held by Islamic State fighters.
