Jubilant Seagulls coach Andy Collins believes many of their premiership players – including 20-year-old Norm Goss medallist Michael Gibbons – will be firmly in recruiters' sights come AFL draft time.

"With no disrespect to AFL recruiting, I think Hawthorn had about 16 players out there (in the grand final) and you can see how they (Williamstown players) can compete and stand out still, not only Gibbons but (Andrew) Galluci, (Adam) Marcon, these are really talented, emerging players, (Jack) Johnstone, (Jack) Charleston, I could go on," Collins said.

"The majority of our list is under the age of 25 and I think they were outstanding."

Gibbons racked up 28 disposals and 11 clearances in the win.

"He's probably the VFL equivalent to a young emerging Sammy Mitchell. He's got some real talent and you saw that out on display," Collins said.

Ex-Port Adelaide midfielder Mitch Banner (26 disposals) was also among the best. Anthony Anastasio kicked two ripper goals on the run, while Cameron Lockwood and Galluci made the most of their opportunities with three goals each.

Collins, a born and bred Hawthorn fan and premiership player, took a leaf out of the book of current Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson when analysing his list. Williamstown also won the development league grand final over the Box Hill Hawks.

"To win both premierships, I hear Alastair Clarkson talk about it and they're a successful squad and that squads win premierships. We have such a strong squad at Williamstown," he said.

It was Collins' second VFL flag and his fourth state league grand final as coach. He took Sandringham to a flag in 1997.

"I was really lucky as a player to win it and perhaps  I was able to guide a group into a premiership and that's a wonderful feeling to be able to let them enjoy the success I once had as a young man," he said.

It was also a memorable day for Seagulls midfielder Willie Wheeler, the nephew of Terry Wheeler, who guided the Seagulls to a flag in 1986.

The Seagulls led at every change – albeit only by five points at the main break, before the second half onslaught. Box Hill managed only 2.10 in the second in a wasteful display.

Hawks coach Marco Bello said his team was completely out-played.

"Today we didn't control enough of the footy and they didn't let us play our brand of football and we allowed them to play a dominant style of football that we just weren't able to control any periods of the game, perhaps maybe the second quarter," Bello said.

"If we had kicked a little bit straighter, we may have made it a little more of a fight but we were just not good enough today."

"We had the same personnel in there, the same systems, the same fight and hunger and did well in the second quarter but I guess the opposition must have worked something out to be able to repel that," he said.

Bello believes his team can take plenty of heart out of making three consecutive grand finals.

"As much as that hurts, hopefully you get that little bit of solace from what we've done for this long period ... there's not too many sides that make grand finals let alone make three grand finals," he said.

Bello is a chance to be promoted to Hawthorn's assistant coaching group at the end of the season, following the order of previous Box Hill coaches Brendon Bolton and Damian Carroll.

Collins, meanwhile, is out of contract and didn't want to speak about his immediate coaching future after the flag on Sunday.

"Premierships have just got to be savoured," Collins said.

"I just want to reflect on it and see how the footy club and I feel about it. I just want to take a breath and I really want to enjoy the occasion. I was a young, ambitious 32-year-old when I first coached a VFL premiership and now I'm a 50-year-old and now I just want to savour it. I think I've got a lot more composure and patience now," he said.

A poor crowd of 12,900 – more than 10,000 fewer than last year's grand final between Box Hill and Footscray – at Etihad Stadium has meant AFL Victoria is likely to discuss alternative plans for the VFL grand final next year.

The possibility of it being shifted to the day of the AFL grand final parade (the day before the AFL grand final) has been discussed.

Some VFL fans are calling for it to be moved back to North Port Oval, where the bulk of the finals are played, or IKON Park, for a more "suburban" feel.
