Mount Isa Police Acting Sergeant Luke Flanagan said the pedestrian was transported to the hospital in a critical condition at about 11.15am.
The man died at the hospital and his next-of-kin had been contacted.
Police could not release the man’s name at this time.
Acting Sergeant Flanagan said the 56-year-old road train driver and witnesses had provided information to police, and investigations will continue.
“The pedestrian entered the roadway from the footpath and came into contact with the side of the road train,” he said.
He said there was a crossing and lights near the intersection to East Street.
But the pedestrian was not walking on the crossing when hit by the road train.
Acting Sergeant Flanagan said police were still “looking into” the colour of traffic lights at the time of the incident.
The man suffered a “traumatic” amputation of both legs, according to Queensland Ambulance Service Mount Isa superintendent Evan Kaddatz.
Officer-in-charge of Mount Isa Police Station, Senior Sergeant Col Henderson, said the road train was heading east to Cloncurry.
Police officers were redirecting traffic on Marian Street to travel on Arline and Hilary Streets at midday.
