183 ducks bought at $10 each entered the race track marked in the lake by pool noodles.
The first beak to pass the post belonged to Stuart Godwin, allowing him to collect the $500 prize.
Happy Feet team captain Abby Stuart, 9, said the money would be donated to Cancer Council Queensland.
She expected the team might collect $500 through the duck race.
“I did not know we could raise that much money for the cancer council,” Abby said.
“I am so happy I came up with the idea of the ducks.”
She was encouraged by her mother to find a unique fundraising idea and was inspired by an American documentary about quirky events.
Her mother, event organiser Diane Stuart, said this could be the first of many annual duck racing events to be held in Mount Isa.
Until then, Abby will practise duck racing in the bathtub if her mother will allow it.
