As debate rages about whether or not West Coast was at a venue disadvantage in Saturday's AFL grand final, statistics show that you don't necessarily need a large number of regular season lead-up games at the MCG to win a premiership.

West Coast had played only one home-and-away game in 2015 at the home of footy - a Friday night win over Richmond in June - before the weekend's 46-point loss to Hawthorn.

Port Adelaide president David Koch said an early scoreline of 6.0 to the Hawks and 1.6 to the Eagles showed the difference between Hawthorn playing on its home ground and the unfamiliar West Coast.

On Monday West Coast CEO Trevor Nisbett said he didn't want to make excuses but flagged trying to land more games at the MCG next season.

"It's an old chestnut there are four home teams [playing home games] out at the 'G so we would like to get three of those [at the MCG] if we can," Nisbett said

"We'd like to play there more because it gives our guys the experience on a much wider field…we got spread pretty well on the weekend."

The Hawks played at the ground eight more times than West Coast in the 2015 home-and-away season but history proves it can be done: Sydney was premier in 2012 with just one game at the 'G compared to the Hawks' 13.

Brisbane didn't have an issue winning three flags in a row between 2001 to 2003, playing at the home of football just four cumulative times across three years during that run.

Collingwood lost to the Lions in 2002 and 2003 and played 13 and 14 games respectively at the 'G during the home-and-away season.

West Coast only played at the venue twice in its 2006 premiership season, but lost in 2005 when the club played four games.

On the other side of the argument Collingwood's last 11 games of its premiership season in 2010 were all at the MCG.

"We'd like 11 but the obvious thing is we are going to get two or three - we realise that. That's all part of the draw but we're going to have to adjust to that." Nisbett said.

"The other things we can do is if we try to replicate the size of the ground here but you can't replicate the conditions because of the swirl of the winds and other things.

"It'll all be seen as excuses but they're not excuses what they are is fact."

North Melbourne Premiership player Peter Bell knows all too well what it takes to win a grand final and said getting a feel for a particular venue is not a huge factor - but does play a role.

"If West Coast had played there 10 times in the season, would it have changed the result? Absolutely not. But maybe in a closer game in a different grand final that familiarity with the MCG would certainly be one of the factors in whichever team emerges victorious," he said.

Bell said despite West Coast's positive start to the game it was Hawthorn's efficiency with the ball and accuracy in conversion that was the difference.

"I wouldn't say West Coast were intimidated but certainly some of their players didn't deal with the occasion as well as they would of liked."

Coach Adam Simpson is contracted for the next 12 months, however after the season's performance Nisbett said the club has intentions to extend that over the summer.

"He is pretty happy and the kids have settled so I think it would be a good move if we can cement a longer-term tenure than just the 12 months ahead," he said.
