Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady says the city’s residents would be thrilled to welcome the trophy, and any players that might accompany it, if they decided to tour.
He has been in discussion with Cowboys CEO Greg Tonner and has told Mr Tonner that the city’s residents would be very happ to see them.
“Everyone is talking about the magnificent effort of the Cowboys and it’s brought North Queensland together like nothing else has,” Cr McGrady said. “Mount Isa has always had a strong affinity with the Broncos, especially with the likes of Bruno Cullen and Paul White hailing from our city.
“However, in recent times the support appears to have joined the North Queensland brigade and support for the Cowboys is very strong.
“Mount Isa is definitely Cowboy country, and we would delighted to see them here and share in their marvellous victory.”
The Cowboys confirmed on Wednesday that planning was under way for a tour of Cairns, Mackay and Mount Isa.
Several players from North Queensland's inaugural premiership-winning side would accompany the Provan-Summons trophy on the tour in the coming weeks.
The tour would also travel over the off-season to smaller towns in the vast region covered by the Cowboys' massive supporter base.
"To clarify, this tour will likely involve a group of players and the trophy, and would encompass Cairns, Mackay and (probably) Mount Isa, those being the chief cities (that aren't Townsville) in our footprint," a statement from the Cowboys said.
On Monday, during the Cowboys’ return to Townsville celebration at 1300SMILES Stadium, Mayor Jenny Hill presented Matt Scott, Johnathan Thurston and coach Paul Green with the key to the city for their 17-16 premiership winning effort against the Brisbane Broncos.
“The fans have been waiting 20 years for this moment, which might be the greatest sporting achievement in NQ history,” Ms Hill said.
Thurston thanked the legion of loyal Cowboys fans for their ongoing support.
