Ziebell, already contracted for 2016, has signed a five-year extension. He could have tested free agency, but he and his management group, Strategic Management, told Fairfax Media in September they were keen to lock in a long-term deal as soon as possible.

The tough onballer will be 31 when his new contract expires.

The Roos revealed the extension at the Syd Barker Medal count on Friday night.

"I've loved every minute at North Melbourne and wouldn't want to be anywhere else," Ziebell said.

"I'm proud to be part of what is an amazing culture and a place where we are primed for success.

"While this year was ultimately disappointing on field, everyone here – from the players, to the coaching staff, to the administration – know what we can achieve going forward and are aware of the hard work we need to put in."

Coach Brad Scott praised Ziebell's toughness, leadership and commitment.

"Jack is a courageous player who puts everything on the line week-in, week-out," Scott said.

"He's a natural leader and an important part of the club's future and his loyalty has never been questioned.

"We are absolutely delighted he's committed until at least the end of the 2021 season."

Defender Sam Wright has also extended his tenure, and will remain a Roo at least until the end of 2018.
