Held at the Mount Isa Rodeo Arena, the awards paid tribute to the growth and many successes of the city’s business community over the past 12 months.
Mr Remington’s business was named the Business Growth Award winner and he also took the top gong with the Business of the Year Award.
Topfire Constructions specialises in civil construction and offers a range of services, including poly pipelines, excavation and earth moving.
The business has grown from having a single worker – Mr Remington himself – and one unit of machinery six years ago to now employing a staff of nine full time workers and having more than 60 units of equipment.
Mr Remington said he felt humbled at winning the awards.
“I didn’t expect it,” he said.
“I didn’t go into business to win awards, but for the personal satisfaction.
“I did it because I wanted the challenge.
“I don’t think I’m better than anyone else, but it’s good to be recognised for the hard work you put in.”
Mr Remington, who has lived in Mount Isa for 10 years, said he felt overwhelmed at winning two awards.
“Winning one was amazing, but winning two was overwhelming,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it.”
He said Mount Isa had given him “a great opportunity” in business and he liked to give back to the community by sponsoring a range of activities in the northern outback, including the recent Spring Cup Race Day.
Mr Remington thanked his staff members for their support.
“Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said.
“To me, they’re not just a number.
“In my company, you’re part of a team – part of a family.”
He also expressed gratitude to his partner Maria Johnstone for her help and support and to Commerce North West for ”a great night and making the event happen”.
