IT’S an 800km round trip from Mount Isa to Richmond, but the journey was well worth the fuel money for local horse trainer Denise Ballard on Saturday.

Ballard trained half the winners on the six-race program, All Fives ($9) leading the charge in the Open Handicap (1400m).
Ridden by Terrence Hill, All Fives crossed ahead of Darcey and Smooth General to notch his sixth win of the past 12 months.
The six-year-old gelding has had health problems recently, but Ballard said the galloper was getting back to his best if the Richmond outing was any indication.
“I had a small virus in my stable and had to scratch him before the Spring Cup,” she said.
“I’ve been frustrated with him, but for him to run such a great race made it all worthwhile.
“While he’ll never be the top-rung horse, if they do something wrong, he’ll be able to win.
“He’s very honest.”
Also winning on Saturday was Travel In Style ($2), the five-year-old gelding taking out the Benchmark 70 Handicap (1200m).
Ballard said it was a well-deserved salute after a couple of near misses.
“He’s just run out of his skin his last two starts and hasn’t won,” Ballard said of Travel In Style.
“It was good to see him get there.”
Much of Ballard’s pleasure is derived from her genuine affection for the horse, which now has five career wins.
“Of the horses I’ve trained, he’s one of the hardest trying,” Ballard said.
“He just puts in every time.”
Also producing a big effort for Ballard on Saturday was Wulfwin.
The $17 roughie belied his price to storm home on the outside and win the Class B Handicap (1200m).
Ballard admitted the success came as a surprise after Wulfwin’s recent health woes.
“He’s been sick. He’s had all sorts of things, just small things, that have held up his preparation,” she said.
“But it was still nice for him to salute for (owner) Linda Huddy.”
In other results on Saturday, Craiglea Sacha ($1.80) won the QTIS Maiden Plate (1000m), Beaudragon ($1.50) claimed the Class 3 Plate (1000m), while What The Heck ($6) took out the Benchmark 60 Handicap (1400m).
