At services across the nation on Wednesday, people will observe a minute’s silence to remember those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Remembrance Day marks the moment in 1918 when the guns fell silent on the Western Front.
Local services will begin at the Cenotaph on the Civic Centre lawn at 10.45am. Steve Wollaston from the local RSL sub-branch will conduct proceedings, which will start with the laying of wreaths and tributes. Mr Wollaston said many people from the community would take part in the ceremony.
“We have sent invitations to all of the schools, giving them the opportunity to lay a wreath,” he said. “Wreaths will also be laid by the different auxiliary services in town, plus our dignitaries, such as the mayor and others.”
Following the wreath and tribute-laying ceremony, an oration and prayers will be read by Peter Smith. Les Bunn from the RSL sub-branch will then give The Ode before The Last Post is played.
One minute’s silence will begin at exactly 11am and will be followed by the playing of the Rouse. The national anthem will then be sung to conclude the service.
Afterwards, there will be a gathering for light refreshments at The Buffs Club.
Any organisations wishing to lay a wreath should contact council on 4747 3264.
