If junior netballers only take one lesson from Laura Geitz’s visit to Mount Isa, it should be that growing up in a small town is no impediment to sporting success.

Geitz is from Allora on the Darling Downs, a community of fewer than 1000 people.
The 28-year-old has developed into one of the world’s best netballers and will impart her wisdom in two clinics at Good Shepherd Catholic College on Tuesday, courtesy of Queensland Country Health Fund.
The visit will be Geitz’s first to the Copper City, but she said all regional towns had commonalities.
“I grew up in a small country town myself, so I understand how important it is to reach out to our regional areas,” she said.
“I think there’s a lot of talent out there.
“I’m lucky that Queensland Country Health Fund are such a supportive partner in allowing me to do these clinics.
“This year when we decided to come to Mount Isa, it seemed logical.
“I know there’s a lot of support for netball in Mount Isa, so I’m looking forward to coming up and meeting everybody.”
Geitz has had an enormous year on the court.
After leading the Queensland Firebirds to this season’s ANZ Championship, Geitz captained host nation Australia to victory in the World Cup.
The 58-55 win over arch rivals New Zealand in the final was nearly three months ago, but Geitz said the thrill of success hadn’t dulled.
“That competition was an amazing thing to be a part of,” Geitz said.
“To play a home World Cup, only certain players get that opportunity. It’s only every 20 years a World Cup comes to Australia.
“To be a player that experiences that is very exciting, and to win in front of a home crowd is unbelievable.
“It’s something I’m very grateful for. We played in front of a world record crowd and we played in front of our family and friends.”
Tuesday’s clinics for junior (8-11 years) and senior (12-16 years) players will run from 5pm to 8.30pm.
Joining Geitz in Mount Isa will be Jamaican international and Firebirds teammate Romelda Aiken.
