With the club due to announce a profit of more than $500,000 in the coming days, Jackson announced to staff at lunchtime on Thursday that he had extended his contract until the end of 2017 "because I think this club is on the right path".
Melbourne president Glenn Bartlett told Fairfax Media: "This is a good day for the club. We got on the front foot. With Roosy doing the (coaching) handover next year I just thought it was important to have that stability".
Jackson added that he had approached the board four weeks ago "not out of a broader sense of commitment but because I wanted to. I want to be around because I think this club has changed.
"I'm sure there will be some tough times ahead and we might still get whacked from time to time but we are on the right path."
