With the AFL draft only days away, here is part one of our comprehensive guide which breaks down every club's list, and looks at the talented young footballers who can fill those holes.

Adelaide lost one of the very best players during the trade period but the four it brought in as Patrick Dangerfield departed - Menzel, Seedsman, Hampton and the untried Gore - are all 23 or under, with the potential to spend many years at the club. The middle duo will add run to the half-back line, while Menzel brings high talent. Adelaide's picks are very nicely placed, and they will have decisions to make. The first could be whether to bid for one of the two star GWS Academy kids (as well as Brisbane-bound Eric Hipwood and Ben Keays) and they surely will if no other club has. Allowing the Giants to use pick 10 on a third top-rated player could mean letting them take the player Adelaide wants for pick 13. Some more skill and run around the middle would be handy, and players like Wayne Milera, Harley Balic, Callum Ah Chee, Darcy Tucker and Aidyn Johnson are all chances at either pick. Aaron Francis, too, but he could well be gone. Much may depend on how the Crows see McGovern and Dear progressing, as they could get a look at a variety of talls. Harry McKay would have definite appeal, and Ryan Burton would make sense for them too. He's coming back from a very bad leg injury but is very talented. Could they bid for GWS player Harry Himmelberg? There would be a good chance the Giants let him through, if they did. There's been some talk about them liking Sydney father-son nominee Josh Dunkley and he would fit in well there, but their picks may be just a touch too high.

Like Sydney and GWS, Brisbane showed their hand when they traded down the order during the trade period in search of points to pay for their academy players. The question is how many of them they'll end up with. Their first pick won't be required to match any bids, and unless Carlton does something entirely unexpected the Lions will bring Josh Schache to the club where his father Laurence once played. They have the points they need to match bids for Eric Hipwood, a key-position player, and Ben Keays, a busy midfielder, but what will happen then? It depends where those bids come, and whether clubs bid on any other academy players the Lions want to keep. If Keays and Hipwood sneak down towards the end of the first round, the Lions could end up with a pretty well-placed late second-round pick still intact. If a bid comes before that pick for (academy players) Reuben William and/or Corey Wagner, they'll have to work out whether to match the bid or whether there's a player left in the pool that they like better. If a bid doesn't come, they'll use the pick in the draft; all up, they're planning to fill five spots. Hipwood and Keays are talented players and with Schache will help make for (another) encouraging restart. With a mature midfield and so much young talent having walked out in recent years, Brisbane's problem at the moment is the gap between that midfield group and its promising but skinny young talls. They'll be hoping Josh Walker can play a meaningful role in bridging that gap, and that they can speed up the development of Harris Andrews, Hipwood and others.

The Blues have holes in almost every part of their list, whether it be for talent, depth or both. Having plugged a few holes during the trade period - probably for the short term, though Kerridge is tough and Plowman's had some setbacks - they need to simply get some talent in. While this draft isn't the most exciting one, their picks are still placed well enough for them to do that. The first question that jumps to mind, looking at the very bare cupboard that is their forward line, is why wouldn't they draft Josh Schache? It's a reasonable question and something they would have considered strongly, but it's hard to argue with them seeing Jacob Weitering as the best long-term option for their club. He should become a significant player for the club. From there? They have options. Will Charlie Curnow or Sam Weideman slip through? Do they pick Harry McKay at 8 or 11 as their key forward in the making? It feels highly possible. They could grab full-back Keiran Collins, knowing how well he and Weitering have teamed up playing together for Dandenong and Vic Country, or look at Harry's brother Ben. Midfielder Clayton Oliver is a chance at No.8, there's a tiny little chance Darcy Parish could reach that pick and they will have done some work covering off on Aaron Francis, Wayne Milera and Ryan Burton. Darcy Tucker's run could appeal, Harley Balic is another option and players with pace - such as Wayne Milera, Jade Gresham and David Cuningham - would be chances, the latter two at 19. Sydney father-son nominee Josh Dunkley is a bid option there too, as a tough inside midfielder with a hard-working nature. The Blues shouldn't have trouble matching a bid for father-son draftee Jack Silvagni, should one come. If it does, and arrives late enough, they might be able to pick a sixth player.

The Pies have five spots to fill but will probably go into next year two short, unless a player they rate highly happens to still be on the board when their fourth pick comes around. As bids for academy players are matched by the northern clubs, their second and third picks could end up moving into the late 40s-early 50s. They paid plenty for Treloar but know exactly what he can and should deliver for a number of years, and Aish was right in their mix two years ago when they opted for Scharenberg so they'll have high hopes for where he can go from here. The Pies haven't got a genuine crumbing forward on their list, and that might be something they look for late, particularly if they plan to use Elliott higher up the ground at times. It's hard to anticipate who'll be available at their picks, but Jade Gresham and Daniel Rioli would be chances if they happened to get that through to 27. Those two would also bring pace and polish, filling another potential list need, though Treloar will instantly add some of that. Aidyn Johnson, David Cuningham, Alex Morgan move the ball at speed, and may be around the mark at 27. So too Luke Partington, with Brayden Fiorini, Tom Phillips and Tom Doedee other options. Brandon White has good pace too, though has used it more off half-back to date. If there's one other thing the Pies could do with it's probably a tall forward or back. Of course, this depends a bit on where they see Moore ending up, and who's available. It's hard to see Ryan Burton getting that far, but Ben McKay might be there, and at pick 27 would certainly be worth consideration. The quirky Callum Moore is also worth a look and they could consider bidding for GWS player Harry Himmelberg, if someone hasn't gotten in first.

Essendon will play their biggest part in a draft for a very long time. They have drafted quite well from minimal picks in the past two years but are looking to take six and need to nail them. The holes in their list are obvious. They've got some coverage in defence but certainly need to look at bringing in a key forward to develop alongside Daniher. Sam Weideman could be there, but has had injury problems and is coming from a long way back with his conditioning. Harry McKay wouldn't look out of place at 5, and they could also get a look at Charlie Curnow. Curnow isn't super tall, but could become a competitive part of a forward-line group. He could also end up a powerful midfielder, the club's other glaring area of need. The Bombers have a bit of pace (Fantasia, in particular, showed great signs late last season) but Zach Merrett is their youngest pure onballer and Heppell, going into his sixth year, is next. In other words, they really need mids. It's easy to see Clayton Oliver's power and burst appealing to them, as well as Wayne Milera's courage and classy ball use. Aaron Francis has great midfield instincts, but not the endurance to run there all day just yet. Even as an aggressive forward or scene-setting back, he'd be a solid pick. Darcy Parish and Harley Balic are other options. The Bombers could look at using a late pick on former Geelong tall Mitch Brown, and could be a chance for McKay's twin Ben in the 20s. There's a large bunch of midfielders who could go anywhere from 14-25, with players like Jade Gresham, Tom Doedee, Ryan Clarke, Tom Cole, Brayden Fiorini, David Cuningham, Mason Redman, Rhys Mathieson and Luke Partington some who could fit the bill. Daniel Rioli is a huge chance to go here in the unlikely event that he is available, as is Ryan Burton should he somehow slip through. Jock Cornell, a GWS academy player and cousin of Joe Daniher, could be looked at too.

We all know what Fremantle have been looking for: a key forward. We also know what the Dockers don't have the habit of doing: reaching for one with their first selection if they don't feel like they're the best player there. It's hard to see that approach changing. There's a slight chance Ryan Burton could get through to 22, and he'd be a good pick. The next most well-regarded tall likely to be available is probably Ben McKay, and he could be considered depending on who else is around. Riley Bonner is more a running tall, but he may make it to 22, defenders like Jack Firns or Luke Surman could interest the Dockers late and Jesse Glass-McCasker is a local key forward who could have some appeal. They could also look for a mature, ready-to-go option given where they're at. It also wouldn't surprise to see Fremantle bid for Harrison Himmelberg, a GWS Academy forward, here. An athletic forward, he's just what they need. The Giants would most likely have the points to cover a bid here - depending on how high Jacob Hopper and Matthew Kennedy are bid for - but you never know, and it would be a particularly interesting move given the tug-of-war over Cameron McCarthy that could fire up again next off-season. The Dockers will take three-four picks and while they have boosted their midfield in the past year (Weller, Langford, Blakely and Bennell) their best choices at their first and second picks could be on-ball types again: Mason Redman, David Cuningham, Aidyn Johnson, Jade Gresham, Ryan Clarke, Tom Cole, Alex Morgan and Darcy Tucker are some who could be there. The Dockers are expecting to take four selections, but could end up with just three.

Geelong used the draft to put together their great teams and have taken the opposite approach in trying to leap straight back up the ladder. That said, the Cats brought in their three big recruits and their fourth very big one knowing that two of their past three first-round draftees (Lang and Thurlow) look highly capable at senior level and they (justifiably) are holding high hopes for Nakia Cockatoo. They won't get started in this draft until very late, and while their picks will end up jumping several spots up the order, once the academy clubs holding multiple picks before them start matching bids for their players, it's not exactly easy to predict who will be there, let alone who they like. It will be interesting to see what approach they take, though. Some clubs holding late picks home in on players who fit the type they think their list needs; others simply take the highest names on their list. Who will be there? Geelong have a habit of getting their hands on well-rated players who for some reason have slipped through. Sam Skinner is on his way back from a knee reconstruction and would be a worth considering if available, though fellow talls Luke Surman, Callum Moore, Jack Firns and Jesse Glass-McCasker seem more likely to get this far down. Oleg Markov, James Parsons and Tyrone Leonardis have some athletic upside, and both Blake Hardwick and Ben Crocker would be worth a look. The best options could well be midfielders, though, and having lost Gore and Jansen, two young inside mids, the Cats could look to fill that with someone like Luke Partington, Kieran Lovell, Will Snelling or the versatile Kurt Mutimer or Cameron Hewett.

Gold Coast drafted Peter Wright last year, hoping and believing the team would start moving up the ladder and that the club might not get another look at a good young key forward for a while. It's funny how things turn out. First, Charlie Dixon left, making the Suns' investment in Wright even more valuable. Having him probably helped them feel more comfortable about giving pick three up to Melbourne, in a deal that in part saw them secure the Demons' first-round pick next year. And as it turns out, they could potentially get a call on Charlie Curnow, Sam Weideman and Harry McKay. Will they go that way? They could, but it will depend on who else is around. The Suns could do with another smart, classy forward who could push into the midfield. They have midfielders who can kick goals - from Ablett down to Miller, who began to play more as a midfielder than forward by the end of last season - but Matera was the only small-medium forward on the list above until Jarrad Grant came in as a free agent. For that reason, Wayne Milera and Callum Ah Chee would be right in the mix, at six or 16. Ah Chee might - maybe - be available at 16 if he gets past Richmond, but could be gone, but it's harder to see Milera reaching that point. That said, one or both of Aaron Francis and Darcy Parish could also be available at 6. Either would be tough to overlook.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

The Giants should have a reasonably straightforward draft. The question for them will be how many academy players they can bring in without going into deficit. That said, a small deficit wouldn't be a huge disaster given they have already traded a number of future picks in. Someone will surely bid for Jacob Hopper and/or Matthew Kennedy before pick 10, forcing the club to use that pick to match one of the bids and leaving it unable to use it to take a third highly rated player from the pool. That would give them a look at players like Wayne Milera, Callum Ah Chee, Darcy Tucker and Harry McKay. They won't get a discount for using pick 10 on one of their own players, but the option to do that is obviously open to them. Both Hopper and Kennedy are genuine top-five material but the later the bids come the better for GWS. Harrison Himmelberg, an always-on-the-move forward, could attract a reasonably high bid - perhaps late in the first round - and he is worth getting in given Cameron McCarthy has made it clear his plans aren't to be in Sydney for the long haul. It will depend on how things pan out - how many picks/points the Giants have left after their first three players, and whether bids are made for any others come - but competitive ruckman Matthew Flynn would be hopeful of having his name called out and Lachlan Tiziani and Jock Cornell would too, with Nick Coughlan and Jack Irvine the club's other nominees.
