Chris Judd - West Coast, 2001, 279 games 

The shortlist: Shannon Grant (Sydney, 1994, 301 games), Ryan Griffen (Western Bulldogs, 2004, 223 games), Dustin Martin (Richmond, 2009, 131 games).

It didn't take long for West Coast to realise they had struck gold with a talented midfielder out of the Sandringham Dragons.

It was probably round 17 in Chris Judd's second season that it became obvious to everyone that the Eagles had something special.

Judd exploded with five goals against the "three-peat" Brisbane Lions premiership team in a breathtaking display at the Gabba, and from that point on, a star was born.

Two Brownlow medals, two AFLPA MVP awards, six All-Australians, five best and fairests, one premiership medal and a Norm Smith Medal followed during a 14-year career across two clubs – West Coast and Carlton – both of which he was captain.

This was a pick for "Norm Smiths".

Former North Melbourne and Sydney star Shannon Grant won the medal on grand final day 1999, and he was also a best and fairest winner and All-Australian.

This pick has also produced two of the game's most dynamic current players – Ryan Griffen and Dustin Martin – and fans are grateful for it, as they are both among the best performers to watch.

Martin is representative of a trend at this selection.

Pick No.3 is not necessarily the "Bad Boy" pick, but certainly the clubs who took the likes of Martin, Colin Sylvia (Melbourne, 2003) and Alan Didak (Collingwood, 2000) received some additional off-field "baggage" to go with the talent on it.
