Incumbent skipper Marc Murphy has just completed his third season in the post after taking the reins from Chris Judd, but Bolton indicated yesterday there was no guarantee the 28-year-old, now Carlton's second-most experienced hand behind Kade Simpson, would retain the job.

"I'm really open-minded at this stage," Bolton said on Monday when asked whether the captaincy was up for discussion. "It's a real reset. I want to be able to feel the leadership, look at it, celebrate it and analyse it. I'm really open-minded."

Bolton will oversee the implementation of a new leadership program, with any decision on the new captain to have buy-in from both the players and coaching staff.

The impediments to a potential change, however, are both Murphy's own form, finishing runner-up by one vote to Patrick Cripps in the 2015 best and fairest, and a paucity of obvious replacements.

Simpson and key defender Michael Jamison have both deputised for Murphy in his absence in recent times, but Simpson turns 32 next May, while Jamison is considered an unlikely successor.

While there is universal acknowledgement that Cripps is an obvious future captain, the Rising Star runner-up has still played only 23 senior games entering his third AFL season. His ascension to the role would be a bold move indeed by the Blues.

Bolton was speaking as Carlton officially unveiled its bounty of five players from the national draft – No.1 selection Jacob Weitering, Harry McKay, Charlie Curnow, David Cunningham and father-son selection Jack Silvagni.

But they comprise only a third of the 15 new players Carlton have brought into the club, one of the biggest single list turnovers the modern game has seen.

"It actually does feel like a new club," Bolton said. "We've reset a lot of things — our standards on and off the field - we've got 15 new players and all of our new coaches [director of coaching Neil Craig, and assistant coaches Tim Clarke, Shane Watson and Dale Amos].

"All of our coaches have coached their own team, so they've got an open view to development. There's a lot of energy at the moment, but the siren hasn't gone and the ball hasn't been bounced yet. We know it's going to take a lot of hard work."

Bolton said a teaching and learning environment would be a high priority with a new-look list having to gel quickly.

"I'm not reflecting on what happened before, but we want to set standards in the high performance area, on how we are teaching, so the players aren't just recipients of me speaking at the front, they're participants," he said. "They're thinking, they're learning it's OK to be wrong and not understand, and work their way through it.

"A lot of the resetting and change is around the methodology on how we're coaching, because we want our players to participate and think, and not just receive and coaches tell."

Newcomers Weitering and Silvagni also fronted the media. Weitering, whose family lives in Mount Martha, moved in with the Silvagni family on Sunday, a beneficiary on Monday of a lift to training from list manager Stephen Silvagni, the 18-year-old having only earned his driver's licence last Friday.

"It's been a real whirlwind the last few weeks, and I can't worry about next year - I'm still trying to enjoy the moment and being at an AFL club," Weitering said of the hype surrounding his No.1 pick status. "I'll just concentrate on what's ahead and getting to Christmas and making sure the body and mind are right and we'll go from there."
