Mount Isa Police Sergeant Brendan Poustie, who is leading the search, said the man went missing around 9:50pm on Friday, January 1.
“A dark skinned man with dark clothes was seen approaching Twenty-third Avenue crossing from the Fourth Avenue side and has appeared to have jumped into the water,” he said.
“As soon as he has hit the water witnesses have lost sight of him.”
Sergeant Poustie said witnesses to the incident will be re-interviewed Saturday morning, January 2, for further information.
Around 10pm last night a member of the public saw the man swept away by the flooded Leichardt River at the Twenty Third Avenue crossing at Happy Valley.
A search by police and swift water rescue personnel last night failed to locate any trace of the man.
