The connection between animals and humans has been ongoing over centuries, since our ancestors first began the process of domesticating wolves. This connection can be utilised to the benefit of both creatures, providing humans with a wellbeing advantage, as well as allowing pets to have a loving home.

Having an animal companion has been shown to have many benefits, both physiologically and emotionally. Owning a pet has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, with pet owners being less likely to visit their GP’s. Emotionally, pet ownership has been shown to reduce stress, reduce loneliness and has even been shown to decrease symptoms of depression as well as improve self-esteem. Moreover, having an animal has the capacity to increase empathy. Interestingly, when dogs are present, humans tend to linger longer and create time connecting and socialising with other humans. Like all relationships, time can make us adapt to other’s presence, including our pets – so ongoing wellbeing benefits of our furry friends requires us to take some intentional action to connect with them.
The following are some tips to amplify wellbeing whilst connecting with your non-human companions, which will also give them the loving attention they thrive on:
- Really notice. Pay attention to your pet when you return home – if you have a dog, this will likely be the highlight of his day – revel in his excitement.
- Savour – When you pat your pet, notice the feeling of their fur/feathers/skin on your skin if they like to be touched. Look into their eyes. Notice their scent. Use your senses to soak up the loveliness of your companion.
- Play – spend some time being goofy. Your pets will love it, and you get the benefit of a wash of hormones that will improve your mood, enhance creativity as well as boost your immunity.
- Go out with your companion (if its safe for them to do so) – especially by walking a dog, you can enjoy the benefit of exercise and also experience the benefit of connecting more with others around you.
