In his case, it was a five year plan and then move on.
However Mount Isa weaved its spell and 16 years later he counts himself as a proud local and is now campaigning with Team McCulloch for the upcoming local government elections in March.
“I came here as a graduate geologist to work in the lead mine during the downturn in 2000,” Mr Cain said.
“The mood in the town was low but I saw the benefits a progressive council could have on changing that”.

Matt has moved on from the mines, and is now working as the area manager for Sonic HealthPlus.
When not at the medical clinic, he volunteers as president and coach at the Island BMX Club and he is also a director of the Laura Johnson Home.
Matt said Mount Isa had a bright future if the council assisted in promoting its strengths and providing the right support for businesses to succeed.
“Joyce also has a burning desire to see Mount Isa prosper and it is that enthusiasm and passion that convinced me to join her team,” he said.
Matt said sport and recreation was important too and a great way for families to connect and keep fit.
“I believe that the council should be providing the social infrastructure that provides a safe and healthy community and this is something I will be pushing if elected,” he said.
“Making our parks more inviting with barbecue areas, basketball courts and bike paths are examples of some improvements.”
He said another campaign area was responsible management of the budget to ensure assets were maintained appropriately.
“I’m horrified by the patched up road network that we have in the city,” he said.
“This is the result of reduced spending on roads in the past four years to the lowest levels in recent history”.
Matt completed an MBA while raising four children with his wife and working at the mines.
There had management roles in areas that included continuous improvement and supply and contracts.
Matt said that meant studying at 3am most days.
“I intend to bring the same commitment and energy to the council if fortunate enough to be elected,” he said.
