That being the case, 2016 looms as one of, if not the, most important year of her Hall of Fame career and the Australian golf legend will begin her run at the Vic Open in Geelong this weekend.

In a media conference ahead of the unique tournament at 13th Beach Golf Club, Webb spoke passionately about the goal that has kept her playing a full schedule instead of scaling back and moving towards retirement.

"Four or five years ago, 2016 seemed so far away. Now we are only seven months away," she said on Wednesday.

"When you have achieved what I have in my career, there is not a lot of things that you haven't already achieved, [and] those that you haven't don't seem to be as important as they did when you were 20 years old.

"But the Olympics was something that was never a possibility to me until about eight years ago.

"I am a sports nut and I've always loved the Olympics.

"The Australian public get behind the Australian team at the Olympics every four years and just to be a part of that would be something special."

To make it to Rio, Webb has to be ranked as one of Australia's top two golfers on the women's world rankings come August.

Currently she is the second-highest ranked Australian at world No.33, having lost her mantle as Australia's No.1 female golfer to 19-year-old prodigy Minjee Lee (No.18 in the world).

Webb is unlikely to lose her ticket to Rio though, with the next-highest ranked Australian player, Rebecca Artis, sitting 96 spots behind her.

But the threat of complacency is minimal where Web is concerned, for she sees herself staring down the finish line and wants to spend the next seven months running as fast she can to get there.

Once the Olympics are over, Webb plans to scale back her appearances on the LPGA Tour, the world's premier circuit for women golfers, and so she will put everything into preparing for her medal mission, starting with the Vic Open.

To that end, the signs were promising on Wednesday as Webb and her team finished second in the pro-am at 13th Beach ahead of her early morning tee-off on Thursday (7.40am, Creek Course), where she will headline the marquee female group of Su Oh and 2013 Vic Open winner Stacey Keating.

While consistency is no longer automatic for Webb, the 41-time LPGA Tour winner believes she can still "mix it with the best" on any given week.

"I think if I can get out of my own way, I can still be as good as I've ever been," she said, conceding the problem was what her body, not her mind, allowed her to do.

Webb at her best was the best in the world, so it is not a stretch to say that if she were to turn back the clock at Rio that a gold medal is a possibility.

Webb admitted any medal would be "the icing on the cake".

"If there is a medal on the cards, then that would sit with my major trophies," she said.

"With golf, the No.1 player doesn't win every week. Usually the top three Olympic sprinters in the 100 metres will win gold, silver and bronze.

"There are not many upset in those sports.

"So I think that is something that will make golf appealing in the Olympics, because someone who is No.200 in the world could win a gold medal."

While some big-name golfers, including Australian star Adam Scott, have played down what golf's re-introduction into the Olympics would mean to them personally, Webb is the polar opposite.

"We are all there because of the sacrifices we put in to be at the top of our sport," she said.

"I am excited to be in the athletes' village and the opening ceremony - just to feel what that's like."
