Grimley, 25, was delisted by Hawthorn after the 2015 campaign, having managed just three senior matches, in 2013.

However, he had been a stand-out for Box Hill in recent years, and was the VFL's leading goal-kicker in 2014 and 2015.

Bombers' football manager Rob Kerr said Grimley would help the club's depth.

"Sam is a proven goalkicker at VFL level and with his size and athleticism he has the attributes to fill a variety of roles," Kerr said.

"We hope he will provide support to our forward line and contribute to the team's depth and strength this season."

Grimley joins fellow top-up players Ryan Crowley, Jonathan Simpkin, Matt Dea, James Kelly, Mathew Stokes, Mark Jamar and James Polkinghorne to have joined a club still dealing with the fall-out of the 2012 injecting program.

The Bombers have been allowed to sign 10 top-up players, having lost a dozen current players to a year-long anti-doping suspension imposed by the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 34 past and present Bombers will appeal that finding, to be officially announced on Wednesday, but it will still mean they cannot play this season.

In other news, North Melbourne veteran Daniel Wells was a standout in an intra-club match on Saturday having missed most of last season with an Achilles injury.
