THE Mount Isa Crime Stoppers chair Kim Coghlan believes momentum in the committee could be lost with the retirement of police district Superintendent Russell Miller and the move of his wife, Vicki.

The Superintendent and Mrs Miller have been involved in the committee for a decade shortly after arriving to Mount Isa but they move to Brisbane later this month.
Mrs Miller is the treasurer of Mount Isa Crime Stoppers.
“We’re losing a high ranking officer, losing an executive position as well,” Ms Coghlan said.
“We need to get out there, we need new members to come on board.”
She said the main role was to make sure the Crime Stoppers number – 1800 333 000 – was advertised to community members, as well as to highlight the fact it would be an anonymous call.
“It’s the only avenue where people can ring up and know there’s no repercussions,” Cr Coghlan said.
She said between 12 to 18 phone calls are made monthly to Crime Stoppers that relate to incidents in Mount Isa.
The committee also fund-raise for Crime Stoppers by holding events, such as an upcoming pizza night in the Hard Times mine crib room on February 19.
Superintendent Miller’s Crime Stoppers role is as an extracurricular activity, and one that is formally separate to his role as a high ranking police officer.
“If it wasn’t for the committee there would be some people I wouldn’t have met at all, so it’s been great."

“The fundraising goes into the Crime Stoppers rewards program.
“If people ring up or go online and report a crime, if the information leads to an arrest and in solving a crime they are entitled to a reward,” Superintendent Miller said.
However, few tippers chose to collect, he acknowledged.
Mrs Miller has been part of the committee about eight years.
She said it was sad to leave the Mount Isa community and the Crime Stoppers committee behind.
“It’s very emotional, I have met a lot of lovely people up here,” Mrs Miller said.
“It’s been rewarding and especially coming up here to Mount Isa, I didn’t know anyone.
