Documents lodged this week with the corporate regulator revealed the Suns made a $300,000 loss last year, compared to a $1 million profit in 2014.

However, the Suns annual report showed the AFL contributing $18.6 million in grant funding in 2014, up $2 million from the previous financial year. It also showed that the club borrowed $1.59 million from National Australia Bank in 2015, on a two-year term with a maturity date of June 30, 2017.

The Suns, who many pundits tipped to make the finals last year, slumped to 16th position in the club's first year under new coach Rodney Eade.

The financial report also revealed a  $1 million fall in membership and ticket income to about $6.6 million, falling merchandise sales and a $2 million increase in employee expenses to about $22 million.

Revenue for the club rose $1.2 million to just under $35 million. Sponsorship and supply rights income rose about $800,000 to about $7.5 million.

Suns chief executive Andrew Travis said the extra funding had been required to help deliver long-term programs.

"We received further AFL funding to ensure we continue to make inroads into the Queensland market and invest in the initiatives needed to deliver long-term sustained success to the Gold Coast community," he said.

"We have made significant strides in helping to build interest in AFL in the state which contributed to the record $2.5 billion AFL TV rights deal and are also proud of our work in volunteering more than 26,000 hours in the community over the last five years and driving a 82 per cent growth in community football on the Gold Coast.

"Pleasingly in 2015, our corporate revenue was up by more than 13 per cent in a year where we have also raised more than $22 million in government and private funding to establish the new training and administration centre which will be ready later in the year and, along with the $140 million development of Metricon Stadium, will also provide an important venue for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games."
