MOUNT Isa’s Good Shepherd Catholic College presented their school leaders to the school body, family and community members on Thursday at their Opening Mass.

Assistant principal of religious education, Jacqueline Harper, said the opening mass was to celebrate the start of the new year, the Year of Mercy door and introduce the school leaders and leadership team.
“We hold this event at the start of every year,” Ms Harper said.
“Each of the leaders have a different portfolio and their focus is on that area. They also help out with all the major events throughout the school.”
The six representatives discussed their role and what it means to them to be a leader.
Leader for the sports portfolio, Riley Barturen, said he would set expectations for younger students and lead by example conveying a positive role model for the student body.
“My role requires me to organise all sporting activities within the school, while setting a positive example to students,” Riley said.
Leader of the spirit portfolio, Jarrod Bell, said he would like to inspire students to attend church and love God.
“My role is to encourage students to come to the Good Shepherd Parish Youth Group and offer assistance with any religious queries,” Jarrod said.
Leader of the academic portfolio, Erin Faithful, said she would like to encourage and inspire students to do well in school and do great things with their life.
"My role is to help with any academic aspects of the school including, Queensland Core Skills test, NAPLAN and academic week,” Erin said.
Leader of the cultural and environmental portfolio, Sophie Troxell, said she would cover events like Are U Ok? and Clean up Australia Day.
“I enjoy being a leader, so far it has been fun and it has been really rewarding to represent the school body,” Sophie said.
Leader of the student representative council portfolio, Rhianna Wood, said a representative from each grade addresses her with their issues and ideas and she can look into fixing or improving it with the help of the principals.
“My goal is to motivate the younger students and to show them that they can make a difference in the school by having a voice,” Rhianna said.
Leader of the arts portfolio, Alyssa Ventura, said her role was to organise activities for the arts department including, music, drama and art.
“I am currently working on a lot of things.I am trying to involve the school in community events to showcase our talent. To show we are not just about academics and sports we can show our artistic talents too,” Alyssa said.
“Being a leader is about encouraging the students and finding out what they would like to do and encourage them on that pathway.”
The leaders will continue to represent the school throughout the year and demonstrate their leadership skills to the community.
