The passerby called police with the report just before 6pm on Tuesday.
A helicopter with a spotlight trained on the river could be seen patrolling the area, near the West End Ferry Terminal, on the St Lucia side of the suburb, about 7.45pm.
A police spokesman said initial investigations suggested the death was not being treated as suspicious.
