Southern Gulf Catchments funded the final amount for the interpretive display to include signs and a video display.
The signs above each fish tank features the type of fish, a basic description of what the fish is, what the size growth rate is, eating habits and tips on how good they taste.
The video display covers what the hatchery project is about and what the Fish Stocking Group’s function is in the Mount Isa community.
Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group secretary and hatchery project coordinator, George Fortune, said the interpretive display had received positive feedback since its opening in February.
“The official opening had about 250 people come through and another 300 people came through the following day when Outback at Isa had their open day,” he said.
“It is a good all-round performer as far as getting information and interest out there. All the fish come out of Lake Moondarra. There are 13 species featured in the display with just over 20 species in the dam, so we do showcase majority of the fish we have here in Mount Isa.”
Some of the fish currently on display are Rainbow Fish, Archerfish, Barramundi, Catfish, Sleepy Cod and heaps more.
Mr Fortune said they wanted to keep the display dynamic and interesting.
“We will change the tanks around every three to four months and change out the fish in the display and put new ones in,” he said.
The display room is part of the Fish Stocking Groups goals, to show the community the environmental initiative and environmental factors that go into sustaining the ecosystem.
“Through the display room we can show people exactly what the fish are, what they look like and what sort of environment they live in,” Mr Fortune said.
“The Fish Stocking Group is an environmental organisation who look after waterways, land and to educate people about what are in waterways so locals can appreciate it.”
