Having dealt with a 61-point loss to the Gold Coast Suns, the Bombers now face a reborn Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday.

There will be optimism aplenty when the club, including past greats, embark on a pre-match march to the ground, but the challenge will then be confronting a Demons' unit seeking back-to-back wins to start a season for the first time since 2005.

"We've still got a fair way to go to see exactly the way we want to structure up our lineup so it's meant that from round one to round two and, possibly for the first few rounds, we'll be throwing some things around before we settle on how we go about things," Worsfold said on Friday.

"The message is around being patient while we're working out how exactly we want to see things and where we're going to play players and in which roles."

That patience, though, hasn't extended to big men Shaun McKernan, Craig Bird and Jonathan Simpkin, who have been dumped.

"Shaun hasn't been in great form over the last few weeks. He certainly hasn't given us enough when he's been forward so that's another reason why we've had a change," Worsfold said.

"It's very hard to run into form at AFL level so he gets an opportunity to have a hit-out with the VFL boys ... and just take some marks, get some shots at goal and be more heavily involved in the game. That is what will get him up and going better than anything."

Amid the changes, small forward Nick Kommer will play his first game since 2013, when he managed all 19 of his senior appearances. A fourth-round draft selection in 2012, Kommer battled knee tendonitis in 2014 and through the first half of last season, returned briefly in the VFL but then a torn thigh meant he missed two months.

"When I arrived [in October 2015] there were still serious questions about whether he would be able to get back and play AFL footy," Worsfold said.

"He deserved the opportunity. He stuck to his program and worked hard to get back."

Mature-age defender Michael Hartley, who spent two years on Collingwood's rookie list, will make his AFL debut.
