Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley says his club will "do everything we can" to look after suspended forward Angus Monfries, but would not confirm whether the club would offer the former Essendon player a new contract.

Monfries, 29, is one of the 34 current and former Bombers who were suspended by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in January for the 2016 season.

While the six affected Essendon players whose contracts were due to expire at season's end have all been guaranteed new deals by the Dons should they wish to return, the Power have not yet publicly declared they will re-sign Monfries, whose current deal runs out at year's end.

Questioned about Monfries' future by former Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd — who is a friend of Monfries — Hinkley said Port were concerned about Monfries' welfare.

"We like to look after good people. And Gus is a very good person," Hinkley told Channel Nine on Monday.

"We'll do everything we can to possibly look after Angus Monfries in the future."

Meanwhile, Hinkley said veteran forward Jay Schulz could miss more than two months due to the back injury that has kept him sidelined for the past fortnight.

Schulz, 30, is uncontracted beyond this season, and there has been speculation he may not play again.

But while Hinkley said that surgery was an option, he remained "hopeful" that Schulz would return.

"We've got a bit to go through with Jay. He's got some stuff to still work through in the next 24 hours to be honest and we'll make some decisions after that. But we won't make that until we've got all the evidence and all the information that we need.

"After a bit of recovery time I think he'll be OK.

"If he did need surgery, I think it's an eight- to 10-week recovery, so it still gives him plenty of time to get back this year."
