Young Guns defeated Tigers 10-10 (70 points) to 5-10 (40 points) thanks to a blistering last quarter where they kicked seven goals one behind to their opponents 0.2.
Tigers started the brightest taking an eight point lead into quarter time and then extending their lead at half time 5.6 to 3.5
But they would not kick a single goal in the second half though Lake Nash could also manage only four behinds in the third quarter before coming home with a wet sail.
Young Guns coach Trevor Age said it was “great team performance”.
Tigers coach Jarryd Harrison said it was a good hard fought game.
“We just ran out of legs in the last quarter,” Harrison said.
“With two weeks off we have a lot of work to do on the track.”
Best on ground for Tigers was Rhys Lillico who kicked two goals.
In the earlier game Rovers were far too strong for Buffs in a game played in very warm conditions at Legend Oval.
Rovers won convincingly 19.12 (126) to 5.2 (32).
Buffs battled hard in the first quarter and kept Rovers’ score down to 4.2 (26 points) while they kicked one goal.
When Buffs kicked the first goal of the second quarter they had genuine hope.
But that only sparked Rovers into life and they put on a display of sharp-shooting kicking seven goals straight for the quarter.
Rovers were more errant in the second half kicking 4.6 in the third quarter and 4.6 again in the final quarter while Rovers could only manage one goal in each quarter.
The new look Buffs team may take a few outings to gel, while Rovers stamped themselves out as early premiership favourites with a dominating display.
The league has a weekend off for the Dirt N Dust festival in Julia Creek and Isa Fest the following weekend and resumes on Saturday, April 30.
In Round 2 Tigers play Rovers in the early game at 12.30pm.
Young Guns play Buffs at 2.45pm.
