LOCAL projects have benefitted from $1.2 million in 2016 from the Glencore Community Program North Queensland for projects in the north and north-west.

Glencore said they awarded funding to eight new partnerships and continued funding to four existing partnerships this year.
The eight successful new projects are the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership program, Project Booyah to provide training and support for disengaged youth in Mount Isa, Whitelion’s Sport for Life program for young people in Mount Isa and Cloncurry, a new sports field for the Cloncurry Recreation Grounds, a club house extension for the Cloncurry Gun Club, healthcare equipment for the Cloncurry Multi-Purpose Health Service, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery initiatives in Townsville and a threatened species bilby enclosure at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary.
The four continuing projects for 2016 are the Books in Homes literacy and reading program, support for Mount Isa RACQ CareFlight Rescue, the construction of affordable worker accommodation at Laura Johnson Home in Mount Isa and Cloncurry PCYC’s Youth and Community Engagement Coordinator position.
North Queensland Copper Assets Chief Operating Officer Mike Westerman said Glencore was committed to playing an active role in local communities and supporting ongoing development despite challenging market conditions.
“Funding is directed towards projects and initiatives that support the priorities and needs of our communities, with an emphasis on capacity building and sustainable outcomes,” Mr Westerman said.
“Our most recent Glencore Community Attitudes and Stakeholder Survey results indicate local people wanted improved community services and facilities, with a focus on infrastructure, along with youth development opportunities, to ultimately improve livability and quality of life.
“We’re pleased to be able to support community infrastructure this year with funding for a new sports field at the Cloncurry Recreation Grounds and we’ve also aimed to address youth crime in Mount Isa with a PCYC program for disengaged youth.”
Mr Westerman said since 2004 the company had invested more than $35 million through our Corporate Social Investment programs in Queensland communities.
