Mount Isa took a team of 13 players to compete in the under 15 boys 2016 softball state championships.
The championships were held in Rockhampton on the weekend of April 8-10.
The local team came third overall and also took away the trophy for the most improved team for the whole tournament.
It was actually a combined team with the Logan team from Brisbane as they did not have enough players and Mount Isa were short, so eight players were from Mount Isa and five players were from Logan.
The team competed under the name of Mount Isa/Logan with joint coaches Craig Drew of Mount Isa and Michael Bristowe of Logan.
Out of the tournament, Queensland Softball will pick around 30 players to join their development squads.
Mount Isa has three players who were eligible and they will find out whether they were successful in two weeks.
Coach Craig Drew said he was extremely proud of the team.
“They did real well, they played well beyond expectations,” Drew said.
“We’ve got crop of young players here, quite a few have made the Australian team.”
Over the three day tournament Mount Isa/Logan played against Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Redcliffe, Ipswich, Redlands, Noosa and Gladstone.
The boys saw some tough competition and close games throughout the weekend.
The grand final took place between Gladstone and Redlands with Gladstone taking out a 10-0 win.
The final placings were
1. Gladstone
2. Redlands
3. Mt Isa/Logan
4. Noosa/Suncoast
5. Toowoomba
6. Bundaberg
7. Ipswich
8. Redcliffe Leagues
9. Rockhampton
10. Hervey Bay
11. Caboolture
12. Maryborough
13. Brisbane
The players now return to their own leagues.
Mount Isa softball is played every Saturday morning at Alexandra Park.
