And if they win? It's the type of form reversal which would have had those very same punters tearing down that ($150 million) grandstand (some can only hope) in days gone by.

And here is the very problem with Kermadec in the All Aged Stakes. A few weeks ago he came within a length-and-a-half under weight-for-age conditions of beating Australia's best racehorse Winx, the one who has a box and raceday stall reserved usually next to his. Not bad form, if you ask me.

In the fortnight after, he attracted money to beat Winx in the Doncaster Mile. And didn't get close. Punters rarely stew over stewards reports when checking on the usual excuses for a poor performance of a runner they're interested in.

They should have put the kettle on to read Kermadec's Doncaster dossier. Didn't quicken when asked. Blood in the mouth. Poor post-race recovery. Likely to be kept to sprint distances. Since treated for back soreness.

Enough to send a mug scrambling for an isolated corner in a grandstand to have a quiet moment of reflection, but there's not much room for that in the public space at present.

So here's the thing: Kermadec is running again a fortnight later. Chris Waller's call to start his stallion-in-waiting when he had a paddock-full of excuses to send him to lush grass should be enough to have a notification pop up when every punter logs into his or her account on Saturday. Kermadec is OK. All is well with Kermadec. Why the hell is he $8 to win this race?

Another stablemate Press Statement is $3.50 favourite. Excuse me, but I couldn't see Press Statement getting past Kermadec in a month of Sundays at weight-for-age on the George Ryder run. The same two horses turn up here and what's going to change at 1400 metres?

So forget the Doncaster, watch man-of-the-moment James McDonald weave his magic from an outside gate with (hopefully) a positive ride given the muddling pace on paper and cheer home Kermadec at massive overs in the last group 1 of the carnival.

The other group 1? Yankee Rose on three legs - topical given her very minor lameness earlier in the week - should beat this lot on exposed form. But $1.45? Not for me. Or for anyone I would think.

Faraway Town ($16) is the value play. Whether she can make it third time lucky against Yankee Rose having met on debut and last start in the Sires Produce Stakes is very debatable, but if there is one horse crying out for the mile it is her. A Warwick Farm quinella looks a good bet.

The support card? Joe Pride will be hoping to close the book on an autumn carnival to forget, but Target In Sight was an eye-catcher when resuming and always runs well early in his campaign. The $5.50 in the Hall Mark Stakes with the incomparable Hugh Bowman up looks appealing.
