But it shouldn't be a cause for hysteria, nor reason to change the very nature of our game.

In the past few days, we've had Lions coach Justin Leppitsch suggest part of May's suspension should include a return game against Brisbane.

And we've had renewed calls for the introduction of a yellow or red card system.

Both are absolutely ridiculous.

Please, let's just consider the May-Martin collision for what it actually is. As brutal as it was, Martin has pulled up OK and will try to play this week.

Every bump looks far worse and more violent when we watch it over and over, especially in slow motion. The reality is that May's decision to leave the ground was a split-second one and the entire incident played out in the blink of an eye.

If people want to make the case for red or yellow cards in light of Barry Hall punching Brent Staker or Tyrone Vickery whacking Dean Cox, then they should go ahead.

They would be wrong - you don't need to change the entire rules of a game for two isolated incidents in the space of eight years - but at least they would have some grounds for an argument.

The problem with painting the May situation in the same light is that it's not a premeditated act. It's a reflex reaction with both players moving at high speed. Yes, he goes past the ball, but that in itself is not against the rules.

Leppitsch's suggestion is even more stupid.

Let's say, for instance, the Hawthorn version of Matt Suckling had cleaned up Mitch Wallis last year. Suckling gets four weeks, three of them straight away and then another week to be served against the Bulldogs.

And then he goes and joins the Bulldogs without the Hawks having played against them then.

What happens to his extra week?

You only need to have a look at The Winners Rebooted to know how brutal footy once was. Back in the 1980s, May-Martin style shirtfronts (and far worse - think Leigh Matthews and Barry Cable) happened every weekend.

We've come along way since and the game is safer than it's ever been.

Goats of the week:
People will always say the guy who retaliates gets hard done by. But Scott Lycett got sucked in by Tyrone Vickery and then did the silliest thing possible. The fact he "punched" (and that seems a dubious way to describe it) Vickery with his eyes closed only adds to the embarrassment.

Things that make you go hmmmmm:
There is plenty of heat on down at Collingwood, on Nathan Buckley, Eddie McGuire and the playing group. Have to wonder whether a recent meeting of powerbrokers at the club was more than the "catch-up" that it has been described as.

Also, with the AFL's ongoing focus on inclusion for women, don't be surprised at all if the next CEO of the league is female.
