Mitchell Aubusson will tomorrow play his 200th NRL match for the Sydney Roosters when his team takes on St George Illawarra in the Anzac Day clash at Allianz Stadium.

His personal milestone will pass without fanfare, rightfully pushed to the background behind the commemorative ceremonies of our special Anzac Day remembrances.

However, I think it important that our game recognises such achievements, especially men like Mitchell.

Two-hundred first grade games for the one club is quite extraordinary these days. To put it in perspective, there have been 9334 first grade footballers take the field since 1908.

Mitchell is only the 304th player to have competed in this many matches. That's in the top 3 per cent of all those who have played at this level.

I can remember back when he first walked into the Roosters many years ago. He was quiet, polite and somewhat shy. But he looked you in the eye when he spoke to you and he delivered a firm handshake. Country kid. Good stock.

Physically, he didn't turn too many heads either. Not overly big, kinda spindly, first impressions would have you questioning if he would be too fragile to make it in the big league. If he was a horse in the parade ring at the sales, I doubt he would've attracted too many bids based on appearance.

All that changed when he started to train. He was honest, compliant and never complained when things got hard. There was a determination in the way he attacked his work. Time would show that he played the same way too.

It's funny, because when I say he didn't turn heads at first glance, he is exactly the kind of player all coaches are looking for. He makes his statement when the going gets tough.

It would be cliche to say that Mitchell Aubusson was a player that every club likes to have in their side. The truth though, is that not too many teams in the NRL can boast a player like Mitchell. He is quite rare. He is not a high flier.

He never shops himself around to other clubs when his contract is up for renewal. He is loyal and passionate about his team. His only goal is to be regarded by his coach and teammates as a valuable team player.

A look at Mitchell's wonderful career so far shows the magnitude of his performances.

Born 1st October, 1987 (28 years of age). Mitchell played his junior football for the Ballina Seagulls and Ballina Zavier College. He represented the Australian Schoolboys in 2005. He joined the Sydney Roosters in 2006, where he played Jersey Flegg (Under 20s) and NSWRL Premier League (now NSW Cup) for Newtown (then the Roosters feeder club). He played in Newtown's 2006 NSWRL Premier League grand final loss to Wentworthville.

Mitchell then made his first grade debut (at five-eighth) in round one, 2007 (on the same day as Shaun Kenny-Dowall who plays his 204th first grade game for the Roosters alongside Aubusson on Monday).

Remarkably he has been overlooked for selection in Country Origin teams from 2007-2015, and is expected to miss selection again in 2016. They must watch different games to me.

Mitchell is extremely versatile. A real team man. He has played five-eighth, centre, winger, lock, second-row and hooker in his 199 games.

He also captained the Roosters in the opening match of 2012 in Braith Anasta's absence. He was awarded the Roosters' Clubman Of the Year Award for 2015. Mitchell played in two grand finals (2010 and 2013, scoring a try in their 2010 loss). The Roosters won the 2013 title. In total he has played in 14 finals matches.

Mitchell has also been extremely durable. He missed the last 16 games of the 2011 season through injury, but has only missed three since. Monday will be his 110th of the Roosters last 113 games.

He had also played 26 first grade games in each of the last three seasons, after playing all 24 in 2012.

Aubusson is just the eighth player to play 200 first grade games for the Roosters, who are now in their 109th season. The others are Kevin Hastings, Luke Ricketson, Brad Fittler, Craig Fitzgibbon, Anthony Minichiello, Mitchell Pearce and Shaun Kenny-Dowall. That's elite company.

Some players fill in from time-to-time in various positions, but few are genuinely amongst the clubs best three players in three different positions in any given season.

Aubusson has been one of the best players at the Roosters for a number of years in three positions, second-row, centre and hooker. Left or right side it doesn't matter. Starting or from the bench – doesn't matter to Mitchell – whatever the side needs.

There has been not one scandal and never a suspension. He's a great ambassador for the club, an absolute gentleman and a fan favourite.

Unlike a few players who have hit the 200 first grade game mark playing with struggling clubs, for many of the 10 seasons that Aubusson has been in first grade, his club has been one of the top performers.

The Rooster's playing rosters during this time have boasted numerous representative class centres, second-rowers and hookers, but whenever he has been fit (which has been most of the time) there has always been a spot for him in the Roosters best 17.

He contributes every match in both attack and defence. At 98kg and 181cm he is small in comparison to many in the game but he's a real footballer, with the ability to run great lines, support the ball carrier, tackle the biggest and fastest opponents, and set up his supports.

He may start a game in one position, but injuries to team mates will often see him shuffled to two or more positions in the one match. He handles it with ease.

It must be of great comfort to his coaches to know whatever happens on any given day, all contingencies can be covered by this wonderfully versatile young man.

It also begs the question of just what makes a valuable player in rugby league today. Quite often the players who the media and fans laud as being the best and most valuable in a particular club, are not necessarily the players valued most by the club itself.

The media and fans only really see players when they take the field every weekend for that 80 minutes of action. Within that 80 minutes too, the qualities that fans and the media look for in a player, are not necessarily the attributes that coaches recognize as being vital to success.

Quite often the public perception of a player, generally created through the media's commentary, is quite different from reality. The magic run, step, pass, kick or tackle, has little or nothing to do with character and reliability. The image of a player perceived from the outside looking in, can often be very different to the opinion of those who deal with him seven days a week.

Mitch Aubusson's value can best be articulated by those who coach and play with him. Rest assured he is held in the highest of esteem by all who know him.

Although Monday's game is a Dragons' home game, supporters from all clubs should pay tribute on Monday to a great clubman. Not every club has a Mitch Aubusson, but those that do are much better for it.
